Mary Ellen Beale’s nativity set is nice but her collection of decorative nutcrackers is outstanding!

Mary Ellen purchased the nativity set in Florida, perhaps at a Macy’s store. The figures are painted ceramic and were produced in China. She displays the nativity set on a counter top between the kitchen and family room of their Greenlefe home. To add an element of earthiness to the scene she sprinkles some straw around as a reminder that Jesus was born in a stable.

Since 1990, Mary Ellen has been a collector of decorative wooden nutcrackers. Also displayed in the family room is this collection of these art objects in various sizes, shapes, occupations, avocations and themes received as gifts and gathered from her travels. While she does not have the Holy Family as nutcrackers, she does have the three wise men, traditionally named Balthazar, Caspar and Melchior. She displays these gift bearers on a side table in the living room.

Scripture: Isaiah 60:1-6

Thought for the Day: If you are a collector, what do you collect? If you have never collected anything, what would interest you so much that you might begin this hobby?

Prayer: Gracious God, we thank You for the opportunity to travel and see the beauty and wonders of this world, which You created. While our footprints quickly disappear from having been there, we are thankful that we can return with souvenirs of our having been there, even if they are but memories. Fill us with wonderful memories of Christmas this year as we journey once again to Bethlehem, recalling the story of Jesus’ birth. In His name, we pray. Amen.
