Devotions Based on Hymns from Glory to God and Their Scriptural Allusions
Deuteronomy 33:27
During the difficult struggles to help the church regain its focus on Christ in the Reformation, Martin Luther set scripture to music. Psalm 46 is the main inspiration for the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is our God.”
The image of a powerful God overcoming earthly and heavenly forces also rings through in Moses’ words in Deuteronomy.
27 He subdues the ancient gods,[l]
shatters[m] the forces of old;[n]
he drove out the enemy before you,
and said, “Destroy!”
Deuteronomy 33:22
When we sense some conflict in our own lives with dark and destructive earthly and heavenly powers, we do well to cling to our mighty fortress, God Almighty.
Great and Wonderful God, when things threaten to undo me in my allegiance to You, help me to trust Your power and follow Your leading, through Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior, in whose name I pray. Amen.
