A Repeated Theme

Whenever my mom or dad wanted to make a point with me, they would often repeat the instruction. Often this would occur over time, because I would tend to forget or ignore things from day to day. Then, if the repetition of instructions was rapid fire, I would really take notice.

In Proverbs 19, there is a basic instruction that is repeated three times in a single chapter.

(It must be important.)

To get wisdom is to love oneself; to keep understanding is to prosper.

Proverbs 19:8

We need to seek God’s wisdom on a regular basis. This is a loving act toward our own selves, and a way to prosper. Did we hear this advice? If not, here’s a second shot:

Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom for the future.

Proverbs 19:20

We need to accept the wisdom that is often offered through the mature disciples of Jesus in our midst. Did we hear this advice? If not, a third instruction:

Cease straying, my child, from the words of knowledge, in order that you may hear instruction.

Proverbs 19:27

We immerse ourselves in God’s Word, and we surround ourselves with godly people, so that we might grow and mature as mom and dad always wanted us to.

Prayer

Dear God, thanks for surrounding me with people who wish the best for my development in faith, as we walk the path of discipleship together, following our Lord and Savior Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
