A Storm

Matthew 8:23-27

We don’t have to be convinced of the power of thunderstorms. We live in Florida.

Jesus’ disciples also knew the power of sudden thunderstorms as they fished on the big lakes in the mid-east.

The folks who created the Spark Story Bible for children included Matthew’s account of how Jesus calmed the storm in the tales they wished to tell young followers. They recounted the waves, the flashes of lightning and the gusts of wind, and how Jesus slept right through it.

They also tell what happened after Jesus was awakened by his frightened followers:

Jesus stood up in the boat and lifted his arms, “Peace. Be still.” In an instant, waves lay down on the lake. Shhhh. Clouds made a space for the sun. The raindrops stopped, and there was silence instead of thunder.

We all know how powerful a Florida thunderstorm can be. Do we also know the One who is more powerful than any storm in our life?

Prayer

God, help me to calm myself in the midst of the turmoil of my daily life, as I remember that You are more powerful than any sudden storm that might confront me. Let me find my peace in trusting You to keep me from sinking. Amen.
