A Treasure in a Field

In Matthew chapter 13, we find a spot where Jesus tells three parables in a row. The first of the three is recorded in a single sentence:

44The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Jesus tells several “kingdom” parables during his ministry. This short parable in Matthew 13 invites the hearer to understand how wonderful God’s kingdom truly is.

If you were to stumble onto the incredible richness in life (and in the life to come) that God promises to give us in the kingdom, would you act as if you had found a buried treasure in some stranger’s field? Would you go and sell whatever you must in order to buy that field for yourself?

If your answer to those questions has been yes, then a next question begs –

“What are you willing to give away so that you will have room in your life for the joy of God’s kingdom?”

Prayer

God, remind again of the joy of accepting my place as one of your children. Help me to make room for your Word and your will to fill up my life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
