Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Psalm 4

Many of us were taught to say a prayer before meals, and at bedtime. “God is great, God is good…” “Now I lay me down to sleep…”

A bedtime prayer is comforting. An eventide thought, as we close our day and begin our night, also brings peace.

Hymn #675 in the Glory to God Hymnal, All Praise to Thee, My God, This Night, could serve as such an eventide prayer. It helps us reflect on God’s blessings of the day now spent. It lets us surrender the wrong things we might have done to God’s grace through confession. It asks for the blessings of good sleep.

The hymnal editors suggest that this hymn might be paired with Psalm 4:8. As we conclude this evening prayer/song, there is a great postscript at the end of the Psalm:

I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.

Psalm 4:8

Prayer

As I find the time to rest this day, help me to trust myself to Your care, so that rest may truly come. Amen.
