Devotions Based on Hymns from Glory to God and Their Scriptural Allusions

I Chronicles 17:16-17

This is one of the best-loved hymns of the Christian faith. It is probably based on a host of biblical passages, and the editors of the Glory to God Hymnal suggest a connection with I Chronicles 17:16-17.

16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 17 And even this was a small thing in your sight, O God; you have also spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come. You regard me as someone of high rank,[b] O Lord God!

God’s love for us, and God’s grace, is truly amazing. God cares for us, as wretched as we might be. Because of God’s love and care, those of us who should be lost are found. The ones who are blind to God’s mercy come to see.

Prayer

God, who am I that You have brought me this far? I know who I am. I am a child of God. I am someone claimed by the grace of Jesus Christ. I am saved, redeemed, and blessed. And I am grateful for all that You have done for me. Amen.
