I am thankful for food.

Psalm 104:13-15

“From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
    the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.
 You cause the grass to grow for the cattle,
    and plants for people to use,
to bring forth food from the earth,
     and wine to gladden the human heart,
oil to make the face shine,
    and bread to strengthen the human heart.”

Family? Sure. Friends? Of, course. Fun, Fellowship? Yes, yes. I am thankful for those big ones that start with F, but today I am particularly thankful for food. Food is such an incredible gift from God. Not only the nutrition and fuel to keep our bodies going, but also the variety of deliciousness. Food is one of those incredible things that transcends its simplicity. Food serves as a bridge to our past as recipes are passed down from generation to generation. It acts as the centerpiece around which we gather together at a table with friends and family. Food fills our bellies and sustains us for life. In our faith, the foods of bread and cup are symbols to help us remember the saving death of Risen Lord.

When you really think about the myriad of foods that God has blessed us with, we should be in awe of the variety. Every time I watch a travel and cooking show on TV, I discover some food that I have never even heard of before. Food truly is a gift from God, in all its many forms, flavors, and functions, and for that I am grateful.

Prayer

Generous Creator, thank You for the gift of food. You have created a world that is filled with such variety. Thank You for Your creativity and care for all of creation. Help me to be mindful of Your provision, especially when I scarf down a quick meal in my busy day. Strengthen me to pause and savor Your generosity. May I remember that there are those who do not have a full pantry and those who worry about from where their next meal might come. Empower me to share this gift with others so that we can all enjoy the blessing of food. In Your name we pray, Amen.
