I am thankful for grandchildren.

Proverbs 17:6

Grandchildren are the crown of the aged,
and the glory of children is their parents.

New Revised Standard

Children’s children are a crown to the aged,
and parents are the pride of their children.

New International Version

I am grateful for my grandchildren. (That is no surprise to any of you who have put up with me for the past three years and two months.) The Bible says that they are the crown of the aged. I’ll gladly acknowledge that I’m not a kid anymore, since it means that I have come now to play with my children’s children.

And I am thankful also for grandparents. My own grandparents hold a special place in my memory and in who I have become.

I conducted a funeral recently for a grandmother in our church, and her family had a little quote from Mr. Rogers (The Rev. Dr. Fred Rogers, Presbyterian Minister and Children’s TV Guru) in the funeral bulletin.

Grandparents are both our past and our future. In some ways they are what has gone before, and in others they are what we will become.” Mr. Rogers

I am thankful for my place in the grandparent game.

Prayer

God, thank you for those who have shaped our lives. Thank you for the love that is shared in the grand relationships we are allowed to encounter. Amen.
