Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal
Haggai 2:7
“I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all the nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the Lord of hosts.”
On an autumn trip to New England some years ago, we visited Newport, Rhode Island. During the gilded age, the fabulously wealthy built what they called “summer cottages” by the sea. The Breakers, Rosecliffe, The Marble House and The Elms are just a few of the magnificent mansions in this resort community. At the time these fabulous showplaces were built, the owners were vying for the best, the most elaborate, the most modern, the largest, the grandest etc. Just as soon as the barons thought that he had claimed a prize another baron outdid his neighbor and snatched it away. Those “cottages” are something to see!
In the scripture, Zephaniah speaks of all treasures coming to the Lord and of the Lord’s house, being filled with splendor. In the fourth stanza of the hymn, “Angels, from the Realms of Glory”, a tribute of praise is brought to the Lord.
All creation join in praising God the Father, Spirit Son, evermore your voices raising to the eternal Three in One: come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ the newborn king!
God of grace and God of glory, we cannot fathom the glories of Your kingdom. What we do know is that Your kingdom surpasses all that gleams and glitters here on this earth. Accept our thanks and praise for including us among those who will dwell there forever and will forever praise Your name. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
