Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own insight.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths
The biblical book of Proverbs contains wisdom sayings. Chapter after chapter, we find poignant pointers on how to live life. Hymns of faith can do the same thing as the words direct our thoughts to how we might live.
The editors of the Glory to God Hymnal suggest a connection between two different hymns and Proverbs 3:5-6.
One of the hymns is #819 Be Still My Soul.
The hymn writer talks about instances in life (the cross of grief or pain) and the changes that may come, and the assurance that God will sustain us.
I remember seeing a little wall hanging years ago that said
Life is not a problem to be solved
But a mystery to be lived.
Sometimes it is enough to trust in the Lord with all our heart, to be still in our soul and know that “God undertakes to guide the future as surely as the past.”
Prayer
Help me to still my soul in Your presence today, dear God, so I can remember what You have done, listen to what You plan, and trust that You will keep me as Your own. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
