Some hymn writers have set entire Psalms to music. On other occasions, a single line or verse from a Psalm has inspired a song. This happens twice in The Glory to God Presbyterian Hymnal in response to Psalm 75.
The opening verse to this Psalm says:
We give thanks to you, O God;
we give thanks; your name is near.
People tell of your wondrous deeds.Psalm 75:1
In the scriptural index to this hymnal, Psalm 75:1 is listed as a basis for Hymn 647 Give Thanks.: “Give thanks, with a grateful heart; give thanks to the Holy One “…
and Hymn 654 In the Lord I’ll Be Ever Thankful: “In the Lord I’ll be ever thankful; in the lord I will rejoice! Look to God; do not be afraid. Lift up your voices; the Lord is near.”
Psalm 75 does start with this simple sentiment; we should give thanks to God. It’s a good way too to start a simple song of praise, or a simple day in our lives.
Help me, dear God, to give thanks with a grateful heart as I lift up my voice for Your wonderful deeds in my life. Amen.
