Matthew 5:9
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
One Bible commentator notes that Jesus uttered these words in the midst of what was known as the Pax Romana. Through miliary authority and might, the Romans had squashed wars (and people) in their Empire. But was that type of treatment really “peace”?
Jesus was probably more in tune with the connect of Shalom. This Hebrew word for peace meant harmonious cooperation aimed at the welfare of all.
It seems that those who seek to live up to this later outcome might well be showing their heritage as God’s children.
Prayer
God, let me find my proper place in the human family as a peacemaker. Urge me to work for harmony and the welfare of my sisters and brothers in Christ, as I follow His words and His will in my life. Amen.
