Matthew 5:4
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted,
Scholars who write about this verse go in a variety of directions. (Some tie it to the prophet Isaiah who spoke against economic and societal injustice in Israel. Others seek the source of mourning in our awareness of our sinful nature and actions. Or we can generalize the act of mourning, and await for comfort.) I guess, in the light of all of these we could ask —- What comfort does Jesus provide?
As the Prince of Peace, He helps us address political/social wrongs. As our Savior, He helps us receive mercy and forgiveness and life eternal. And as God in human flesh, He gives us the peace that passes understanding.
So, where we find ourselves in the midst of mourning we know that our happiness and blessing comes as we will be comforted.
Prayer
Meet me where I am, Dear God, and let me find comfort for my soul. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
