Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Isaiah 25:7-8

More than a feast on a mountain, God’s people desire victory over death and sin. In “The Third Eschatological Section” (Isaiah 25:6-10) the goal of the Messiah’s coming is spelled out in great detail:

And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over the nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces …

It is understandable that the editors of the Glory to God Hymnal would see a connection between this passage and one of our great Easter Hymns, #245 Christ the Lord is Risen Today!

As God’s children, as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, we know that the victory over death belongs to us through our God. The shroud that is cast over all peoples will be erased. That’s a bright future!

Prayer

Wonderful God, when things are dark and the day seems dim, we know that we can gaze down the line and know that you are in control. If death is the worst that the world could ever do to us, you have swallowed up death at the cross. Remind me today to live as a victorious disciple of our Lord and Savior Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
