Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Daniel 7:9

As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One [Ancient of Days] took his throne, his clothing was as white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames and its wheels were burning fire.

Four of my first cousins are boys, although they were younger than me, as I was the eldest grandchild. While I had enjoyed playing with Matchbox Cars, something new came along that captured their attention. They collected and played with Hot Wheels. As I read the scripture lesson above, I was reminded of those toys of yesteryear.

When I think of a throne, I see a very large ornate chair possibly with carvings bedecked with gold leaf and jewels. The throne described by Daniel seemingly resembles a Hot Wheels car with fiery flames and wheels with burning fire.

The allusion to Daniel 7:9 appears in the first stanza of Come, Thou Almighty King:

Come, thou almighty King, help us thy name to sing help us to praise, Father, all glorious; o’er all victorious,            come and reign over us,

“Ancient of Days.” To Thee great One in Three, thy sacred praises be, Hence evermore!  Thy sovereign majesty, May we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.

For another hymn with scriptural allusion to Daniel 7:9 and “Ancient of Days,” the reader is referred to Hymn 41, “O Worship the King, All Glorious Above.”

The reader is also encouraged to sing the fourth stanza of Come, Thou Almighty King and to use it as your prayer for the day,

Prayer

To Thee great One in Three, thy sacred praises be, Hence evermore! Thy sovereign majesty, May we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore.
