Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Isaiah 9:6-7

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and righteousness from this time onward and forevermore.

Imagine if you will, opening the pages of The Ledger, The Orlando Sentinel, or The Tampa Tribune and finding nothing but “good news” stories. What would it be like to turn page after page and find no articles on child abuse, kidnap, murder, road rage, scams and schemes, sexual assaults, shootings, theft, and violent altercations? Moving beyond the news of our local communities, state and nation, wouldn’t it be wonderful to see pictures depicting reconciliations, racial harmony, long overdue honors being awarded, opposing political party members cooperating, and wars ending?

We see in the third and fourth verses of our hymn, Crown Him with Many Crowns, an allusion to the scripture above.

Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a scepter sways
From pole to pole that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise.
His reign shall know no end; and round his pierced feet,
fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet.

Crown him the Lord of years, the potentate of time;
Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer hail! For thou hast died for me;
Thy praise shall never, never fail, throughout eternity.

Prayer

O God, what a happy day that will be when there will be no more wars and when all will live together in peace and justice and righteousness will reign forever more! Thank You, Lord. Come, Lord Jesus! Amen.
