January 7 through June 6, 2019
Used in First Presbyterian Church’s Christ Kids and Sunday School Programs.
Most adults are familiar with the lyrics of an old song entitled School Days. The lyrics are:
School Days, school days,
Dear old Golden Rule days,
‘Reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hick’ry stick.
Though hick’ry sticks are no longer employed in the public education system, ‘reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic are still taught. They are the basics to higher learning.
Our Christ Kids and Sunday Schoolers are taught from the Spark Story Bible and it covers important stories from the Old and New Testaments. It seemed like a good idea to acquaint our devotional readers with these same stories. So, for the next few months we will be using as our texts the stories found in this children’s Bible, trusting that we, too, can learn from these lessons.
Each day’s devotional will include the scripture reading for the day and you are invited to read from the translation or version you most enjoy, e.g. NASV, NRSV, NIV, The Message, etc. Each devotional will quote a line from the Spark Story Bible, so you can get in touch with your own child side. As in the past, each devotional will include comments by the writer and a brief prayer. For parents of young children, this devotional may give you the opportunity to engage in these stories with your children and to speak of faith throughout the week in addition to Wednesdays and Sundays, when Christ Kids and Sunday School are in session.
