Matthew 18:1-5

18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

The disciples wanted to be powerful and great (and each the greatest in the kingdom.) They maybe even scoot next to Jesus so that power might rub off on them. And Jesus told them that greatness and godliness came in the humility and innocence of children. When we put a child in our midst, and when we focus on their lovely lives, we might just be experiencing the presence of our Lord Jesus.

Prayer

Let the little children come to me in my daily life. Help me to pause long enough to see what their pure and simple lives have to offer. And help me to feel your presence, Dear Lord, in my world. Amen.
