Tomorrow Jacob would meet his brother Esau, whose birthright he had stolen for a bowl of stew. Tomorrow Jacob would meet his brother Esau after having tricked their father into giving him his blessings. Tomorrow Jacob would meet his brother Esau after not having seen him for years and not knowing what his reaction would be to lay eyes on that scoundrel. It was going to be a very fitful night. In this instance we can imagine how Jacob might have offered this bedtime prayer.

Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray the Lord my soul to keep

Watch o’er me through the dark of night

And wake me with the morning light.

Prayer
