God Rested

Are we really to think that God was physically tired and needed rest?! Of course, that’s what the Bible tells us. I find it truly difficult to think of God resting, the All-powerful, the All Mighty, The All Knowing, the Creator of that lives; can ever be tired. The explanation that seems to deal with this problem of mine, is that though some translations of the Holy Book, tell us that “in the beginning, God created.” I think it best for every one of us to write down on paper God’s Way as it is found in our Bible: 2. 1-3a

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had done. So God blessed the seventh day.” Genesis 2:1-3

I particularly like to emphasize the last phrase, “God blessed the seventh day.” Because God blessed this day and hallowed it, there are still many Christians who to this day hold that God rested so we ought to rest as well. The United States of America once had an enforceable ‘Blue Law’ that most the States enforced. Most businesses were closed with only a few offering milk and bread. Then slowly it did not become enforced. Today, for many of us, Sunday is a day of many and full activities. So much so that Sunday is now just about the busiest active day of the whole week. Now even the YMCA plans special activates for Sunday morning, at a time when we all need to be found in God’s house.

Of course it is no secret that Genesis is a book of the Old Testament and therefore became a source of the Old Testament Book of Law. As such, the Rabbis have used this portion of Holy Scripture to establish The Torah, teaching its followers what should be and should not be observed on the Sabbath. From a very interesting resource on Genesis, we can learn because it is Yahweh that is tired and needs rest, we also need a beautiful Sunday to sit back, and to use our free time to learn more about this wonderful life God has created. Genesis teaches us because humankind is created in the image of God, the rest period of God is promised for all humankind as well.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for opening up Your eternal ways before us, lead us and teach us that we are all Your people in living out our days. In Jesus name we pray. Amen
