Luke 21:5-19
Recently by way of television we witnessed the destruction of a large section of Notre Dame de Paris. I have never been to Paris, but I had always dreamed of visiting the City of Lights. I have heard reports of those who have visited that historic religious site and how beautiful it was. I am grateful that a portion of it still stands (the two towers and the rose window) and am saddened that many objet d’art were damaged or lost, but that a number were saved. Even with reconstruction, Notre Dame will not last forever, but God’s love will. I am reminded of these words from Isaiah 40:8,
The grass withers, and the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
It has been said that what does not destroy us only makes us stronger. God’s love for us is strong and it will help us cope with and endure troubles we face. We can emerge from those difficulties even stronger than we were
There are people who may raise doubts in our minds about God. Others may tell us things about God that are untrue. We should not listen to them. Jesus said,
Scary things will happen. Storms and other events will make you feel afraid. Don’t worry! God is always with you.
Creator God, we thank You for all the beautiful things in this world and for bestowing talents on those who can create even more beautiful things. Help us to realize that as beautiful as things are here, they are surpassed by the beauty of Your kingdom that awaits us. When we encounter storms and troubles in life, let us lean on You for strength and be comforted that You are with us and will never abandon us. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
