From the moment I start to read the verses in Matthew 7:24-27, I begin to sing the children’s song The Wise Man Built His House. For those of you who might not be familiar with it, it’s a song we learned in Children’s Sunday School and we still teach it to the children today. Here are the lyrics:

The Wise Man Built His House

The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
And the wise man’s house stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
And the foolish man’s house went “splat!” [clap hands once]

So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
And the blessings will come down

Oh, the blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The blessings come down
As your prayer go up
So build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ.

The verse of the song that begins with “So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ” perfectly sums up Matthew 7:24-27. We have to make sure we have our faith foundations securely built on Jesus. Once again, we are called to help others make sure their houses of faith are built on the solid foundation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as well. When the storms of life start coming in – how will your house stand? Do you have it built on Christ the Solid Rock I Stand, or do you have it built on loose sand that will surely blow away? Grab your hammer and nails and let’s get building together!

Prayer

Our Solid Rock, help us to make sure our houses of faith are built on the solid faith foundation that only You can provide. When others need assistance making sure their foundation is secure and strong, help us to grab our hammer (Bible) and nails (prayers) and aid them in building their house on the Lord Jesus Christ. In His most precious name we pray. Amen.
