Grandpa Harold and Grandma Bess Dunham moved to Eagle Lake from Iowa. Bessie liked to entertain and probably got her Orange Cookie recipe from a local person involved in the citrus industry. Grandsons, George, Steve, and Ron, enjoyed spending time with Grandpa Harold listening to baseball games on the radio and eating Grandma Bessie’s cookies. A few years ago, George was longing for Grandma’s cookies; he contacted a cousin in Georgia to see if she had the recipe. Much to our delight, she had the recipe. Each time we have these cookies at a family gathering George, Steve, and Ron eat most of them. Grandma’s original recipe follows with comments and updates in parentheses from Cousin Jan. Enjoy!

Recipe

375 degree oven

Mix together

1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening (can be Crisco, margarine or butter)
Juice and rind of 1 orange (rind is zested)
1 egg
1 cup Sour Milk (that’s 1 cup whole milk mixed with 1 tablespoon vinegar – let sit for 15 minutes)
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp soda
4 cups flour (sifted)

Drop on greased pan. Cook until done. (I loved that part of the recipe – FYI for my oven it was 8 minutes) Cool – frost.

Frosting

1 tablespoon melted butter
Juice and rind (zest) of 1 orange
Powdered sugar (approximately 1 1/2 cups sifted depending on the amount of juice)

Scripture

Faithful God, thank You for fulfilling Your promise to Jerusalem and Judah to cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David. Our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
