Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal
Isaiah 53:7
The Suffering Servant which is depicted in Isaiah predicted the depths of the agony experienced by our Lord as He made his way to the cross. The images in Isaiah 53 are powerful and profound:
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
Isaiah 53:7
The editors of the Glory to God Hymnal incorporated an African American Spiritual He Never Said a Mumbalin’ Word into the section on Christ’s passion and death to help chronicle the slaughter of the lamb of God. Like a sheep before his shearer, Jesus never said a word:
They crucified my Lord,
and he never said a mumbalin’ word;
They nailed him to a tree,
and he never said a mumbalin’ word;
They pierced him in the side,
and he never said a mumbalin’ word;
The blood came trickalin’ down,
and he never said a mumbalin’ word;
He bowed his head and died,
and he never said a mumbalin’ word;
Not a word, not a word, not a word.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, I praise You for Your self-less gift as You gave up Your life for mine. I have no words to speak, but thanks. You chose to act rather than speak. I am blessed and humbled. Amen.
