Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Isaiah 63:7

I will recount the gracious deeds of the Lord, the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, because of all that the Lord has done for us, and the great favor to the house of Israel that he has shown them according to his mercy, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

What are some your favorite Bible stories?

Certainly, for me are the stories of Jesus’ birth and His resurrection. I love the stories of Jesus teachings using parables like the Parable of the Prodigal Son and the Rich Man Building More Barns for his goods. I love the miracle stories of Jesus walking on water, turning water into wine, healing the man born blind, healing the woman with the hemorrhage, treating the paralytic, blessing the children, and raising Lazarus from the dead. I love so many of his sayings including the “I am” statements and lessons from the Sermon on the Mount.

This hymn takes me back to my childhood years in the Baptist Church. We often sang this hymn in worship. I do love to tell the story and when I was a solo pastor in Virginia, I often gave chapel chats to our preschoolers. I sometimes portrayed Jesus as I shared the stories of Jesus with them.

What are the stories you would love to tell your children, grandchildren or neighbor’s children about Jesus? Are there stories you would especially like to share with them?

Prayer

O God, we give You thanks for the greatest story we have been given to tell. We do love telling the stories of Jesus. Help us always to experience the wide-eyed wonder of children as they first hear the stories of Jesus we love to tell. In His name, we pray. Amen.
