Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Proverbs 23:26

My child give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.

The first person I ever remember singing this carol is the one who I wholeheartedly believe performs, or perhaps I should say, “performed” it best. The singer was Dame Julie Andrews. For some years now her voice has been one that I eagerly await hearing at Christmas.

My favorite verse is the fourth.

What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give him: give my heart.

We all have something we can give Jesus that no one else can. Each of us can give Jesus his or her heart. True, everybody can give his or her heart to Jesus, but none of the other hearts is like yours. It is special! It is unique! It is the gift that only you can give Jesus.

How blessed we are when we give Jesus our hearts and when we let our eyes observe His ways. In following Jesus, we will never be led astray! Thanks be to God! Amen.

Prayer

O God, while we have put the carols of Christmas away for another year, certain phrases and verses stick with us throughout the year and we are grateful. Keep us mindful that giving our heart to Jesus influences every decision we make each day. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
