It’s funny, but talk about cities and walls has gone on for centuries. In high school Latin class, I remember hearing the story of the founding of Rome and a little spat over walls. Walls limit, protect, and control.
A long time before Rome, the writer of Proverbs suggested that without walls and self-control, things could get a little dangerous.
Like a city breached, without walls,
is one who lacks self-control.
Proverbs 25:28
We all seem to need some limits in our lives; boundaries, we call them. Without them, a city can be breached. Without the ones we impose on ourselves, things can get out of hand.
Dear God, as I think today of my own life, help me to build and honor the boundaries that help me to stay faithful to you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
