Names of Christ: Who Do You Say That I Am?

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

With this passage, I can’t help but sing…

This little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine
Oh, this little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine

This little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine
Let it shine, all the time, let it shine

All around the neighborhood
I’m going to let it shine…

Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m going to let it shine…

Don’t let Satan [blow] it out!
I’m going to let it shine…

Let it shine, all the time, let it shine.

Our world can often feel heavy, like there are more places filled with shadow than with light.  As Christians, we know that Christ has promised to be a light to our world and our lives.  By focusing on God with dedicated time for prayer and studying scripture, we can more easily recognize all the ways that Jesus is a light in our lives.  We have the comforting promise in John that Christ will be a light during the times when our path is shrouded, when we are afraid, and when it feels like we don’t know where to turn.  Scripture also reminds us that we are called to share God’s light with the world.  We are called to spread the light of God’s love with our friends, neighbors, and even our enemies.  Our joy and comfort also come from knowing that if we all are showing God’s love, our little lights will quickly illuminate this world.  Today, may we seek to be God’s lights in the world, sharing love and kindness with all who we encounter.

Prayer

Light of the World, we rejoice that You brighten our lives and comfort us in times of uncertainty and distress.  Thank You for empowering us to be Your lights in this world.  May we answer that call in word and deed today.  In Your name we pray, Amen.
