Acts 1:8

When I closed a recent sermon on “life verses”, I couldn’t end that worship service without sharing another favorite scripture. So, I used Acts 1:8 as the charge preceding the benediction.

In Acts, as Jesus is telling His disciples what they will do in the power of the Holy Spirit and in His name, He charges them to “be His witnesses”. He then gives them their territory.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Acts 1:8

They heard Him speak to them while they were in Jerusalem. (Their first assignment). The surrounding region was Judea, and then Samaria. (Their work was expanding.) And then, they also needed to reach out to the ends of the earth.

This life verse guides my part in our mission as a congregation. We do need to be witnesses in Winter Haven to what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. And that witness needs to encompass Polk County, and Florida, and Honduras, and …..

We have the power to tell people of God’s love – to the end of the earth. And we start right here.

Prayer

As You give me the power, Great God, I will tell of what You have done for me in Jesus Christ wherever I am. Amen
