Daily Devotion Focusing on the Missions Supported by First Pres
James 1:27
27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
From the Old Testament and the nation of Israel on through the New Testament church of Jesus Christ, we find that God’s people seek to care for “orphans and widows in their distress.” Caring for those with needs, often times those within their religious community, is part of what God’s people gladly do.
That same thing happens rather quietly at First Presbyterian Church. We talk a lot about our summer mission trips to assist Christians in Honduras. We report every week on what we are doing in our Bag Lunch and Soup Kitchen Ministries. Our combined mission dollars make a difference in so many places outside the church. But we also meet needs “here in the family.”
The Deacons place a portion of their local mission dollars each year in “The Pastor’s Fund.” And when church members have a financial need, the pastors discreetly assist our Christian brothers and sisters. Each year, church families and individuals are helped through times of crisis thanks to your generous giving to our church budget. Thanks for helping us care for the “widows and orphans in their distress.”
Prayer
God, You have adopted us into this family of faith that we call First Presbyterian Church so that we can share in all the joys and struggles of our family members. Thank You for providing the resources so that people feel cared for in our midst. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
