Triumphant Song of Confidence

Of David.

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold[
a] of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me
to devour my flesh—
my adversaries and foes—
they shall stumble and fall.

13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!

Our church’s Heart of Worship service on Sundays at 9:15 AM has a nice opening. Before the first song, drummer Bob Lenfesty usually offers a welcome and vocalist Lindsey Ivey shares a scripture that she has selected for the day. Recently, Lindsey read a few verses from Psalm 27. In searching for “more hope for our days” I have reflected in writing on several psalms. But I had overlooked Psalm 27. Luckily, Lindsey didn’t.

Lindsey said that this is one psalm that she had turned (and returned) to during this pandemic.

The Lord is the stronghold[a] of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me
to devour my flesh—
my adversaries and foes—
they shall stumble and fall.

When the news each day seems to magnify our fears, those are some wonderful words to consider. God is indeed our stronghold. And as we live in the uncertainty of the present, God’s word gives us hope for our future:

13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!

Thanks. Lindsey, for giving us hope that you have found in God’s word.

Prayer

God, we come before You today as Your, sometimes fearful, children. In these days, let us lift our prayers of trust to You, as wait to see Your goodness in the land of the living. Amen.
