Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

[The Pharisees and scribes] became angry and said to Him. Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, Out of the mouths of infants and of nursing babes, you have prepared praise for yourself?”

Matthew 21:16

O Lord, Our God, How Excellent is a hymn setting for Psalm 8, but there is also a reference to Matthew 21:16. We see this in the all five stanzas of the hymn, but particularly the first..

O Lord our God, How Excellent, how glorious is your name.
Your majesty surrounds the earth and children sing your fame.

The heavens shout your handiwork; we stand beneath in awe
To think the One who made all things should care for us at all.

Yet, you have made us less than gods, surpassing all but you
with heart and mind and strength and will to search for what is true.

Into our hands you’ve placed all things: the earth, the sea, each place
We’re called to probe for secret gifts and venture into space.

O Lord, our God, how excellent how glorious is your name,
majestic in your holiness we sing and praise your fame.

Prayer

Gracious God, it is not difficult to coax praise out of children, but adults can be tougher subjects. We cherish the excitement and enthusiasm of children. My we always be numbered among those ready to praise and thank You. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
