Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Isaiah 40:8

The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.”

Floridians know quite a bit about grass withering. All you need do is take a good look at a lawn when there has been little or no rain and when the irrigation system is not working properly. The grass goes from vibrant green to yellow with blades curling and finally turning to brown that crunch beneath our feet. Yes, we are well acquainted with grass withering!

Most people know that I love flowers and admire the beauty of them. Whenever an arrangement is received, the flowers’ colors are so vibrant. Even with water and the additives to prolong cut flowers’ life, the colors will begin to fade, the petals will shrivel and fall, a stench will be produced and finally, the flowers will turn brown. Yes, we are well acquainted too with flowers fading.

In this transient world, it seems that nothing lasts, and everything is constantly changing. We can take comfort that there is certainly one thing that endures and never changes. That is, “the Word of our God will stand forever.” God’s Word endures forever and never changes!

O Word of God incarnate, O wisdom from on high,
O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O light of our dark sky;
We praise you for the radiance that from the hallowed page,
A lantern to our footsteps, shines on from age to age.

Prayer

O God, Maker of green grass and colorful flowers, we thank You for making us. We are grateful that we can cling to Your Word, which endures forever and never changes. Thank You too for reminding us that we are transient. The only way we are given eternal life is through our faith in You, who loved the world so much that You gave Your Only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but may have eternal life. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
