She is not afraid for her household when it snows,
for all her household are clothed in crimson.
She makes herself coverings;
her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the city gates,
taking his seat among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them;
she supplies the merchant with sashes.
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.

Proverbs 31:21-25

Proverbs chapter 31 paints this detailed portrait of the “virtuous woman”. There are so many components to the description, and yet one line seems to stick in my mind:

Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.

When a person has worked hard (at home and in the community), and laid a solid foundation, they are ready for the daily challenges and opportunities. Instead of commotion, there is a sense of strength and dignity. And, with the right preparation, the future is more comforting than confrontational.

When people look at me (or when I am treated to a look at myself) now and in the times to come, I would like to be considered strong and dignified.

Prayer

Wonderful God, help me to live in such a way each day that I am prepared for the daily challenges and opportunities, and peaceful about the times to come. Amen.
