1 For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall never be shaken.5 For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.
6 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.
Most of us have been practicing some version of “safer at home” over the last month in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. And in place of church events, school, or work as we knew it, or other social outings, we may have turned to the television to pass some time. If you are like me, you may have come to the place where you can easily turn the TV off, having had as much as you take from its noise and nothingness.
For the balance of our time apart, how about seeking silence? The Psalmist sings:
For God alone my soul waits in silence.
And what did the Psalmist discover while waiting in silence and solitude?
From God comes my salvation. (verse 1)
My hope is in God. (verse 5)
Salvation and hope. Those are worth waiting for. God gives us salvation in all that Jesus did for us. (That’s the Easter story.). And God gives us hope. (That’s the story for our time.)
Let’s make the most of the silence that comes when we’re are “social distancing.”
Come to me, My Rock and My Fortress, in the silent moments of this day. Speak to me about salvation and hope, and let me trust in you. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
