Names of Christ: Who Do You Say That I Am?

16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16-17 New Revised Standard Version

10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah,[a] the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.

Luke 2:10-12

According to the website biblegateway.com, the word “Savior” appears 25 times in the New Testament, and the word “saved” 61 times. I would have expected the numbers to be higher, because much of the time when I speak of Jesus I call Him my Savior.

He is the gift that God gave to the world at Christmas:

good news of great joy for all the people, to us is born in the city of David a Savior …

He is the expression of God’s love in human flesh:

God loved us so much to send the only Son, so that as we believe in Him we might have eternal life …… He came so that world might be saved through Him.

When I joined the church, I answered yes to the question “Is Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior.”

I still believe that. Thanks be to God.

Prayer

Thank You, God, for saving me – from sin – from myself – from death. Thank You for giving me a Lord and Savior in Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
