Psalm 117

Psalm 117 might be easy to overlook. It is only two verses long. But there’s a lot packed into this tiny song.

Psalm 117

Praise the Lord, all you nations!
Extol him, all you peoples!
For great is his steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
Praise the Lord!

Why should all the nation, and all people praise God? Because of how God treats us all.

God’s love is steadfast. It is the one factor that always exists. And, God’s faithfulness endures forever.

That should be the focus of our reflections:

  • God loves me, and God’s love is there for me even when I am unloving and unlovable.
  • God remains faithful to God’s promises and God’s purpose.

I once took a class from a great Christian, Old Testament scholar Walter Bruggeman. He said that every time he picked up the Bible, he approached God’s Word with two suppositions:

  1. That the Great God of the Universe loved us more than we love ourselves
  2. That God will not stop until the world is turned back to God’s love

God is loving and faithful.

Prayer

Thank You, God, for loving me in ways that I cannot imagine. And thank You for promising me an abundant life as I revel in your love. Amen.
