One title of honor we can bestow on people is that of “faithfulness.” A faithful spouse, a faithful citizen, a faithful family member is a thing of inspiration and joy.
And there do we first see faithfulness?
God is faithful.
In the story of humans from the Old Testament, people often break the laws, commandments, and promises that they make to God. But God remains faithful to them.
In Deuteronomy, Moses proclaims that we shall:
Deuteronomy 7:9
9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who maintains covenant loyalty with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.
The author of the popular old hymn, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” echoes this verse:
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Because God is faithful, faithfulness can exist in our lives.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Prayer
God, let me trust in your love, mercy, and forgiveness, as I practice being faithful to you in return. Amen.
