There has been an adult Sunday School Class meeting this summer to work our way again through the gospels. We have considered Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and now the class is into the home stretch by re-reading and discussing the Gospel According to John. John begins his gospel by taking us way back.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
John 1:1-5

There’s a song in the movie “The Sound of Music” that says, “Let’s start at the beginning. It’s a very fine place to start.” The lyrics of that song then go on to speak of letters and notes as the building blocks of reading and music. So what do we find as the basic building blocks of faith? Let’s start at the beginning with John.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

It’s all about God.

God created us. (“All things came into being through God – the Word”).
God gives life.
God is the light that shines in the darkness.

As we live our lives for another new day, we should always start at the beginning – and focus on God.

Prayer

Thank You, God, for giving me life, and faith, a being. Help me to live today as one of Your thankful creatures, as I follow the Word, my Lord and Savior Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
