Luke 3:21-22
Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved, with you I am well pleased.”
The descending Dove has, as the story of Jesus’ baptism found within all four Gospels, been the symbol of the Holy Spirit’s presence. The Holy Spirt, the third person of the Trinity is most clearly visible in these stories as it takes the bodily form of a dove, the voice of God is heard from Heaven and Jesus is present within the waters of baptism. As the Holy Spirit is later spoke of after Jesus’ death to be that comforting and challenging presence for believers, we are reminded through this symbol. Whenever we are to see the descending Dove, it’s a visible presence and decision of God to be present with each of us. God’s love literally came down and dwelled among us, bringing peace and promise that we are beloved children of God, always.
Prayer
Gracious Lord, as the dove gently alights upon us as Your Holy Spirit’s constant presence, we are reminded of Your deep and abounding love for us. You choosing to come to us, finding us and calling us into relationship with Your Son, the Holy Spirit comfortingly reminds us we are never alone. Thank You, for us grace, and thank You for Jesus’ sacrificial love, Amen.
