Talking About the Tongue… Again

Individual Proverbs, like lots of good advice, sometimes need to repeated. Some of the themes in this book come around often: wisdom, folly, righteousness, the tongue, and our words.

A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.

The tongue of the wise dispenses knowledge,
but the mouths of fools pour out folly..

A gentle tongue is a tree of life,
but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.

Proverbs 15:1,2,4

Let’s consider the words used to describe the tongue and its produce:
soft, wise, gentle

Those are praiseworthy descriptions of how we might choose to use our tongues. And there is the other side of the equation: harsh, angry, folly, perverseness, which breaks the spirit.

Even though we have already considered the topic recently as a devotional thought, now the question is phrased this way — “Do your words usually flow in such manner that people would feel them as soft, wise, and gentle?” There’s still time to make sure that they do. We call that time today.

Prayer

Dear God, let me choose my words this day so that they inflict no harm or damage on anyone they contact. Remind me of the soft, gentle, and wise ways of the Lord Jesus that I follow, and in whose name I pray. Amen.
