Matthew 25:1-13

In Matthew chapter 25 we find three different parables about preparing for the end-times, which Jesus told in the final week of his earthly life. The first of the three is about the Ten Bridesmaids.

As the editors compiled the Spark Story Bible for children, they included all three of the Matthew 25 parables. This is how they recounted the first:

Jesus told a story about getting ready.

Ten bridesmaids ran down the road holding their lamps to light the way. “The groom is coming!” they shouted excitedly. But the groom was late and they had to wait. “We’re so tired,” said the bridesmaids. Ten bridesmaids closed their eyes.

Later there was a shout. “He’s here!” Five bridesmaids jumped up and poured oil in their lamps to keep them burning. But the other five bridesmaids forgot to bring extra oil for their lamps. “Give us some of your oil!” they told the first five bridesmaids. “Sorry, there’s not enough for everyone,” they replied.

Five happy bridesmaids ran down the road to the wedding, leaving five sad bridesmaids who couldn’t go.

Jesus said, “I am coming to meet you again. Be ready for me to come, whenever it may be.”

Before Jesus left His followers, He promised to come again. Are we living our lives in a way that we will be ready and eager to greet Him when he returns for us?

Prayer

Dear God, help me to keep oil in my lamp and my best actions and intentions at the forefront of my daily life, so that instead of hiding anything, I will be happy to greet Jesus when I see Him. Amen.
