Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Lamentations 5:19

But you, O Lord, reign forever; your throne endures to all generations.

The allusion to Lamentations 5:19 is found in the fifth stanza of this evening hymn. The sun rises and sets at a certain time each day. Every day has a morning and evening. Month after month and year after year pass away. God reigns forever and his throne endures to all generations.

So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never,
like earth’s proud empires, pass away;
thy kingdom stands, and grows forever
until there dawns thy glorious day.

Imagine what it would be like to go to sleep one night and wake up the next morning, which would be that glorious day. There would be no more sorrows. There would be no more pain. There would be no more suffering. We would awaken to God’s new and never-ending day. “God is in His heaven and all is right with the world” would have a new meaning for us! That will be the day!

Prayer

Creator God, as children we often played the game, King of the Hill. Different players would try to unseat the presiding king. Each new King would face and do combat with those seeking to become the new “King of the Hill.” Even adults try to become King of the Hill, but it is no game. No one can unseat You, Lord. We praise You that You will reign forever, and Your throne will endure to all generations. Alleluia, Alleluia, Amen!
