22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.                                         New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

FAITHFULNESS

The fruit of the Spirit includes faithfulness. The mention of that word takes my mind in two directions.

1) There is an old hymn that has made its home in my soul as it talks about God’s faithfulness:

“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!” Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided— “Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

Faithfulness is modeled for us by God Almighty as God is always true to God’s promises.

2) Another place where my mind races at the mention of this word is to a prayer that is often included in a wedding service. After the couple has exchange vows and rings, in praying for God’s blessing on the union there is a line that implores God to give them the power to “be faithful to one another and to you.”

Faithfulness is lived in our lives as we keep our promises.

Prayer

Thank you, God for Your great faithfulness, and for giving us the power and the will to keep the promises that we make to You and to those whom we love. Amen
