Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal
But you, O Lord, reign forever; your throne endures to all generations.
You do remember the story of Abraham that is found in Genesis 15!? God takes Abram outside and says, “Look toward heaven and count the stars if you are able to count them.” Then, God says to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness.” Abram and Sarai did not as, yet have, one child, much less as many as the stars in the heavens.
Abram is our spiritual ancestor and you and I are heirs through the covenant God made with Abram, and so we too can sing:
The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above,
The Ancient of Eternal Days, the God of love!
The Lord, the great I AM, by earth and heaven confessed
We bow before your holy name, forever blest.”
God reigns forever and his throne endures to all generations, as represented by Abraham’s descendants, that are indeed as numerous as the stars in the heavens. The hymn concludes with these words:
We praise you, living God!
We praise your holy name:
The first, the last, beyond all thought, and still the same.
God of Abraham and Sarah, we thank You that Abraham believed and that his faith was reckoned to him as righteousness. We are descendants of Abraham and we praise You, living God, for You will reign forever and Your throne will endure to all generations. In the name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord, we pray. Amen.
