Names of Christ: Who do you say that I am?
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16 for in[h] him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He himself is before all things, and in[i] him all things hold together. 18 He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
Colossians 1:15-20
In thinking about names for Jesus, this small section from Colossians is loaded. We can read in these lines that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, the creative force/Creator, the One that holds all things together, the vessel for the indwelling of the fulness of God …….
And there, in the heart of this flowing description, we find that Jesus is the head of the Body, the church.
We belong to Christ’s church. Jesus is the leader, the head. When we look to our ministry, it is all about Jesus as we are His followers. And as we acknowledge that Jesus is the head of the church, we experience God’s fulness of grace, mercy, and peace in what we do together.
As we try to follow the leader in the game of life, thank You God that in the church we are following Jesus, our leader and the head of the church. Amen.
