Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

This is the first and greatest commandment. Matthew 22:38 (NRSV)

Once some years ago I was asked to sing a solo at a funeral. The family requested Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound. I wanted to make it special and so I sang verses 1, 3 and 5 to the very familiar AMAZING GRACE (which is Common Meter). For verses 2 and 4, I sang it to another Common Meter tune AZMON (O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing.) I am happy to say that this combination worked quite well

The Lord Is God is set to the tune AZMON. If you are not familiar with the words, then you are most likely well-acquainted with the tune. If you do not know the AZMON tune well, then you most certainly can sing The Lord Is God to the tune, AMAZING GRACE.

Most people know all or many of the Ten Commandments. Jesus made it easier for people to live as God would have them to live by reducing the number from 10 to 2. Jesus wants us to know that by loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, you are obeying the Lord, for this is the first and greatest commandment. But a second one is like it. You shall love your neighbor as you love yourself. If you have obeyed these two commandments, then you have fulfilled the law. The Lord Is God commends us to take these holy words and keep them in our heart.

Prayer

The Lord is God, the Lord alone! Give honor, thanks, and praise to God the maker of all things and giver of our days.” In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
