Psalm 124:8
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. –
Our Book of Common Worship is an important resource for worship in the Presbyterian Church (USA). It provides both guidance and liturgy for all parts of a Presbyterian worship service. It’s explanation of the Call to Worship is as follows:
“The people are called to worship God. Words from scripture are spoken or sung to proclaim who God is and what God has done. We are thus reminded that our worship centers in God and not in ourselves.”
At First Pres, you will notice that our Call to Worship is formed around words of Scripture (typically a Psalm). These words are our first spoken response in worship and provide us with the opportunity to recognize what we have gathered to do in this space and at this time…and that is worship Almighty God. The Call to Worship is important as it allows us to state aloud why we are hear and claim with intentionality what we will be doing together.
Prayer
Almighty God, we thank You for the gift of today. Help us to recognize all the ways that we can worship You today and to seek those out. Remind us that You are the center of our worship. Strengthen us to center our lives on You and not focus on ourselves. Guide us this day to be instruments of Your peace and love. Amen.
