Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal

Lamentations 3:22-23

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

This hymn is an example of how the Holy Spirit inspired the author to write a beautiful hymn which alludes to God’s love and mercy. While it speaks of God’s faithfulness, it also reminds us that our faithfulness to God is not as strong as God’s is to us. It appropriately ends by encouraging us to let our lives reflect thanksgiving for the goodness of the Lord.

This hymn is poetic speaking of God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea. We can relate to God’s goodness as we stand upon the shore and look out at the Atlantic or Pacific oceans and see that the no land in sight … only waves. God’s love likewise is immeasurable. We cannot fathom how great is God’s love for us nor how kind God is in God’s dealings with us.

Prayer

Creator God, we marvel at seas that stretch out as far as we can see. We are captivated by mountain peaks that ascend beyond the clouds to what must be the floor of heaven. We are filled with awe for Your remarkable kindnesses toward us and are moved greatly that You feel our sorrows in heaven more than we can ever imagine. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
